Week 12: Demo Day

Time: 04/24-05/01, 31 hours

Topics: The Pros and Cons of a Remote Internship.

Tools: Netlify, Prismic, Gatsby, GitHub.

Summary:

Techstars Boston was coming to an end. The finale of the program was Demo Day. Traditionally Demo Day was an exciting event where all the teams got on stage to give pitches to an audience of investors and mentors. This year, for the first time ever, Demo Day was virtual. On the day of the event, I still needed to put the final touches on the marketing website, updating the awards section to include sections for “backed by” and "featured in”. I decided to make some changes to Prismic to differentiate between award objects in the “backed by’ and “featured in”. To show changes to Peter and Joe I pushed a copy of the site to my Github and built the site on my own Netlify account. An hour before the event started I bumped into a huge blocker that wouldn’t allow me to build the site on Netlify. Somewhere in my changes on Prismic, I deleted an important object that was required by definition in the Gatsby site. I could not figure out how to fix this in time so the award section on the website at the time of Demo Day looked off on desktop version. I was doing so well until this point, and I still need to figure out how to fix the marketing site once my finals were over.

Peter’s live pitch was amazing. He put in weeks of practice and it really paid off. In under a minute, he presented how Wunderite was making waves in the insurance-tech industry and explained why Wunderite should be on investor radar. I enjoyed hearing from the other companies as well. The highlights of the Demo Day event were a shout out from hip-hop artist Ice T, and Techstars Boston’s managing director, Clem Cazalot's incredible energy throughout the Livestream.

Afterward, I joined the teams for a virtual after party. Here’s a photo of us enjoying our long-distance happy hour:

This week I also spent many hours working on my internship blog. I added the rest of the tools and topics and wrote my first few weekly summaries.

The Pros and Cons of a Remote Internship: Interning remotely let me participate in an incredible program with the rest of my team. Techstars Boston gave me a deep dive into what entrepreneurship looks like today and an overview of some incredible companies. Although I wasn’t able to make more meaningful connections with my previous neighbors in Woodlawn this spring, I’m incredibly grateful for the connections I could make through the Techstars community.
