Week 3: Plugin Migration

Time: 02/03-02/09, 17.75 hours

Topics: A Christian Perspective on the Insurance Industry, Tech Startups and Entrepreneurship.

Tools: NPM, Gatsby, Prismic, GitHub, Webflow.

Summary:

This week it dawned on me that I could use Webflow to design components and then move them into Gatsby by copying the HTML and CSS over! I used this method to design the blog page for Wunderite.

This sped up my workflow and so I spent some time this week researching the Prismic plugin that Wunderite was using for their marketing site. I found out that there were two versions of the Prismic Gatsby plugin and Wunderite was using an older one. The two plugins were, gatsby-source-prismic, and gatsby-source-prismic-graphql. These were simple NPM installs but the tricky part would be refactoring all of the queries on the site. The differences between the two plugins and the migration method are well outline here. I remember that this week I attempted to migrate the marketing site to use the newer plugin. This would have allowed for new Prismic features like previews and multiple language support. Unfortunately, the migration would have taken too long and the plugin that Wunderite was using currently did everything it needed to.

A Christian Perspective on the Insurance Industry: It was by this week that I got a better understanding of the work Wunderite is doing. The way Peter talks about insurance is similar to how he talks about his many other passions: drones, baking, and halo. Flourishing, for Peter most likely includes the degree to which he is improving insurance agents’ lives. This an example of a concept Dr. Hill discusses in his paper Can Money Buy Happiness? Dr. Hill explains that in contrast to material gain being in a linear relationship with happiness, the idea of “telos", “the degree to which one succeeds in fulfilling their ultimate purpose" also must be included (Hill, 2).

Tech Startups and Entrepreneurship: Working for a tech startup means working with the cutting edge of available web development tools. I think this week I was finally getting a firmer grasp on the advantage of relying on APIs to do the heavy lifting for you across your digital products. It allows for extremely fast prototyping and idea-testing.  During this week, Wunderite was going through the TechStars Boston initiation program and even though I wasn’t present with the team in Boston, I felt their excitement and joy through the calls this week.
